Health unit reports 58 new COVID cases, including one in Orillia

Three deaths were reported today by the health unit - two in Barrie and one in Innisfil; 4 new cases were also reported in Muskoka

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 58 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths in today's update (May 13).

The deaths reported today include two Barrie residents and one Innisfil resident. None of the three cases ending in death were linked to COVID-19 oubtreaks. 

A man between 65 and 79 years old died on May 10. 

A man between 45 and 64 years old died on May 11. 

A woman over 79 years old died on May 12. 

There are 857 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 4,020 variant cases confirmed to date, with 630 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,225 cases of COVID-19 with 9,586 of those cases recovered and 238 cases ending in death. 

There are 30 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes six new hospitalizations since yesterday's update.

To date, 233,854 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 37.5 per cent of the region's population. About 3.4 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Orillia (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Collingwood (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Barrie (16)One youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, six people between 35 and 44 years old, and five people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact transmission, five are listed as community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related.
  • Innisfil (12): Two youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact transmission, and three are listed as community-acquired.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (12): Two youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact transmission and two are listed as community-acquired.
  • Essa (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 18 and 34 years old. One case is linked to close contact, and one is listed as community-acquired.
  • New Tecumseth (7): Four people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Three cases are listed as community-acquired, and two are linked to close contact.
  • There are four new cases in Muskoka, one from Bracebridge, one from Gravenhurst, and two from Muskoka Lakes.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 12).
