Barrie firefighters rescued a fisherman in medical distress on Lake Simcoe Saturday near Wilkins Beach.
The call came in at about 9:30 a.m., said Barrie's Public Fire and Life Safety Officer Samantha Hoffmann.
“It wasn’t an ice rescue in the traditional sense. It was a rescue that took place on the ice,” she said, adding the medical issue had nothing to do with the weather or the ice.
Hoffmann said two firefighters went out in Barrie Fire's inflatable boat while two stayed on shore as backup.
After getting the man back to shore, he was transferred to Simcoe County Paramedics who then transported him to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. Hoffmann said she did not have information on the current condition of the individual.
“There was a group of them, so, gratefully, the people he was fishing with were able to, very clearly, say where they were, where they had parked and what landmarks they could see so that rescuers could get to them,” she said.
