Hot off the heels of his solo debut Open Heart, Victoria, B.C. artist Adrian Chalifour recently released his sophomore single The Collapse, from his forthcoming debut album JOY, set for release Oct. 4. The video for the new track will premiere Sept. 24 on Popdust.

Chalifour will be performing in Orillia on Oct. 5 at The Brownstone.

A change of pace from his jubilant and upbeat debut release, The Collapse shows a more vulnerable side of Chalifour, demonstrating raw emotion with a poignant vocal performance and striking songwriting.

"The Collapse is a song about loss and the helplessness that precedes it," Chalifour explains. "That might mean a lot of different things to different people, and even means different things to me depending when and in what context I listen to it.

"But I can tell you when I first wrote it, it was about the loss of life. My community has lost a lot of good men this past year. Men I grew up with. Men my age: fathers, husbands and business owners with lives and legacies; men we didn't expect to lose," he said.

"I thought about what those last moments must have been like, when you realize there's no coming back. I thought about what their last words might have been - what my last words might be - were there a chance to share them. This song helps me remember who they were and what they left behind."

Produced by 2018 WCMA Producer of the Year Ryan Worsley (Dear Rouge, Nuela Charles) at Echoplant Recording Studios (Port Coquitlam BC), JOY is an upbeat, evocative album that’s ready to permeate the Canadian indie-rock scene.

From anthemic lyrics and feel-good hooks in tracks like Head Down/Heart Up and Calling on Love, to the sentimental moments and raw emotions in Feel in The Night and The Collapse, Chalifour has written a diverse eight-track collection that explores the gamut of experiences that come in discovering joy.

“As I get older, pushing past my youth and headlong towards the frightening horizon of middle age, I find myself reflecting a lot on the concept of ‘joy’,” explains Chalifour on the album concept.

“If we’re fortunate, we start our lives brimming with it. It’s pure, unhinged and unguarded. As we get older and life becomes more about providing, building and giving, joy is no longer a right or a certainty," he said.

"It’s something we need to pursue and make space for. Similar to romance in a long-term relationship, it’s something we need to seek and prioritize. So where does joy fit into that picture? I want to be someone who finds joy in the midst of suffering because on some level suffering is more certain than joy, but joy is there to be found if we seek it," said Chalifour.

Performing heart-driven originals for more than 15 years in various projects, most notably fronting Victoria indie-rock group Towers and Trees, Adrian's songs have charted on Canadian radio, while also touring the country extensively; performing at festivals like Canadian Music Week, Indie Week, Breakout West, Rifflandia, and Rock the Shores.

This led him to making his national TV debut, appearing on hit music-reality show The Launch alongside legendary mentors such as Scott Borchetta, Nile Rodgers and pop sensation Bebe Rexha.

The rave reviews gave Chalifour the push he needed to step out of the comforts of a band and into his whole self as an artist; a move that lead to Chalifour taking home the first-place prize for the 2019 Unsigned Only Music Competition in the AAA category.

To celebrate his debut release, Chalifour is travelling across Canada this fall.
