It's a bird, it's a plane ... it's the new city logo on the water tower!

If you’ve driven along University Avenue in recent days, you might have noticed the landscape is getting a little more colourful.

Atop the hill on the east side of the busy thoroughfare, through the fields and trees, you can see work is being done on the water tower, or what’s technically known as the Harvie Hill Reservoir.

During budget deliberations, city councillors approved funding for work on the structure which had been marred by peeling paint and fading letters.

Politicians decided it was a good time to not only spruce up the edifice but to paint the city’s new logo on both sides of the massive structure.

Hastings Painting Corporation started working on the project on Aug. 27. The Windsor-based enterprise specializes in large industrial and commercial projects throughout Canada.

The local project included pressure washing and cleaning of the exterior in addition to spot concrete repairs and sandblasting.

That work has been completed. Then, the exterior of the strucutre was painted white and work has begun on applying the new city logo on the University Avenue side. The logo will also be placed on the other side and will be visible from Highway 11.

In addition, a new tower access ladder will be installed for entry into the tower from the top of the tower.

As per the city’s request, Hastings agreed to work seven-day weeks to ensure the project is completed before winter.

The price tag for the project is $308,000, with a $30,000 contingency to cover unexpected circumstances and issues should they arise.
