MIDLAND - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been busy checking for impaired drivers since the Festive R.I.D.E. program was kicked off here in Midland on Dec 3, 2018.
Officers have checked over 2,300 drivers for signs of impairment due to consumption of alcohol or drug at 45 separate locations in North Simcoe since then. To date, two drivers have been charged at these R.I.D.E. locations with a criminal code Impaired Driving offence since the kick off.
The first charged driver was reported in the Dec. 10, 2018 media release
The second charged driver was stopped in a R.I.D.E. check set up on Fuller Avenue and Brunelle Side Road in the Town of Midland at 9:20 p.m. on December 13, 2018.
Officers entered into a drinking and driving investigation, resulting in Dan Robitaille, 43 years, of Penetanguishene being charged with:
- Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood contrary to section 253 (1) (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Driving While Ability Impaired- motor vehicle (Alcohol) contrary to section 253 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
He was released on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Jan. 3, 2019. The vehicle was towed and seized for seven days and his drivers licence has been suspended for 90 days under the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) program.
Officers on patrol responded at 7:10 p.m. on Dec. 18, 2018 to a report from the public of a vehicle in the ditch on Church Street in the Town of Penetanguishene. Attending officers, upon speaking with the lone female occupant, entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in Linda Grenier, 68 years, of Penetanguishene being charged with:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration-80 plus contrary to section 320.14 (1) (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
She was released on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Jan. 10, 2019. The vehicle was towed and seized for seven days and her drivers licence has been suspended for 90 days under the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) program.
On Dec. 21, 2018 at 12:08 a.m., OPP officers from Southern Georgian Bay detachment assisted an Anishinabek Police Service (APS) officer with an impaired driving investigation on Christian Island. The investigation resulted in Andrew Tyler Brooks, 37 years, of Christian Island being charged with the following:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration-80 plus contrary to section 320.14 (1) (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Theft of Motor Vehicle contrary to section 333.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Uttering Threats - Cause death or Bodily Harm contrary to section 264.1 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Driving while under suspension contrary to section 53 (1) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario
He was released on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Jan. 10, 2019.
Motorists are reminded that OPP and APS officers conduct R.I.D.E. programs all year round but at this festive time of year when social events are very prevalent, an extra push is made to remind drivers to make the right choice and never drive impaired.
