Kids 12 and under can now hop on the GO Train for free

'This is great for families to connect with the rest of the events anywhere the Go Train goes,' says MPP

There’s never been a better time to take the GO with the announcement today that kids 12 and under ride free year round.

MPP of Barrie/Springwater/Oro-Medonte Doug Downey and MPP of Barrie/Innisfil Andrea Khanjin joined together at the Allandale GO Station to announce that kids 12 and under will now ride GO Tranist for free.

Khanjin said the new initiative isn’t just for March Break but rather year round and hopes that helps the local economy.

“We’re very excited to announce that not just for the March Break do kids get to ride the GO Train for free, but all year round,” said Khanjin. “It’s a huge link to our local economy here, we rely heavily on tourism in the area and now families can come see what makes our city and surrounding area so fun.”

The initiative brings the GO up to speed with the TTC and UP Express, which already have the rule for kids in place. Downey told BarrieToday that while it is a great announcement for Ontario families, it is one he has a deep connection to.

“This is great for families to connect with the rest of the events anywhere the GO Train goes and also helps bring people up here to Barrie for things like Kempenfest,” said Downey.

“I love it because I grew up around trains as my dad was an engineer for 35 years, so I used to ride the trains as a little kid. There’s a particular affection I have for this initiative.”
