CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women) Orillia is excited to launch its current Speaker Series with a presentation by Mehreen Shahid, on Oct. 22 at the Orillia Museum of Art and History, 30 Peter St. S. at 7 p.m.

Mehreen is well known to many in the Orillia area as a communications specialist. Over the past few years, she has contributed articles to several media outlets, including OrilliaMatters. She was employed by the Packet & Times and now has her own communications business, Dark Roast, named as a proud tribute to her skin colour.

Mehreen was born in Pakistan. Her father is a retired brigadier general and as a result, while growing up, Mehreen moved all over Pakistan and experienced many different cultures.

Her mother is a lawyer/teacher and raised Mehreen as an independent thinking woman, an attribute not always admired in her home country. She entered into an arranged marriage which was unhappy and ended in divorce. She then continued her education in Pakistan and eventually moved to Canada in 2011.

Mehreen will share many of her experiences in Pakistan as well as her impressions of Canada and the differences between the two countries. She will provide insights into the roles of men and women, religion, and highlight cultural practices prominent in her native country and share how her early life has impacted her present life in Canada.

The public is invited to attend.

CFUW  is a voluntary, non-profit, organization active in public affairs, working to raise the social, economic and legal status of women as well as to improve education, the environment, peace, justice, and human rights.
