Man nabbed trying to flee in kayak, faces multiple charges

Suspect targeted numerous cottages in the area, say OPP; Cornwall man remains in custody pending Aug. 9 court date

TINY TOWNSHIP - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded at 2:29 p.m. Aug. 2, 2019 to a 911 call to the OPP Communications Centre from a Tiny Beaches Road North residence located near Ishpiming Beach.

The caller had come upon an unknown male trespasser and was threatened with a sharp edged weapon. Attending officers along with the OPP Marine Unit located the male off shore in front of the callers residence in a blue kayak as he fled from the scene. With considerable hardship but without incident, Officers were able to take control and arrest the male while on the waters of Nottawasaga Bay.

The male was transported to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment for further investigation. Thirty-year-old Steven Paul Savage of Cornwall was charged with the following offences:

  • Robbery with weapon
  • Resist peace officer
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous [urpose
  • Mischief under $ 5,000
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Fail to comply with recognizance
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Causing a disturbance
  • Uttering threats - Cause death or bodily harm

Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

And further

  • Operating human-powered pleasure craft without personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board
  • Operating human-powered pleasure craft without prescribed life-saving appliances on board
  • Operating human-powered pleasure craft without prescribed vessel safety and navigation equipment on board

Contrary to the Canada Shipping Act

He was held in custody for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie.

While the accused was in custody, officers were dispatched at 3:13 p.m. on Aug. 3, 2019 to a report of a break/enter and theft at a summer residence located at Cedar Point Road and Concession 20 West in Tiny Township.

The victim advised officers that persons unknown had entered his cottage between Aug. 1-2,2019. OPP officers were able to view surveillance footage and using investigative information from the Aug. 2, 2019 incident OPP Investigators have charged the accused with the following charges in connection to the break/enter and theft contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada:

  • Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada
  • Fail to comply with recognizance
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Mischief under $ 5,000

The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Aug. 9, 2019.
