Matchedash Street re-opened, but only to one-way traffic

With second phase of Front Street reconstruction project underway, re-opening is meant to help alleviate traffic in that part of downtown

The second phase of the Front Street reconstruction project began earlier this week.

The section of Front Street between Colborne Street East and Mississaga Street East has now been closed to all traffic to facilitate the removal of existing asphalt, curb, sidewalk and driveways.

The sewage by-pass pump has been installed and sanitary works have commenced.  Access to business fronts will be available via a pedestrian walkway on the west side of Front Street South between Colborne Street East and Mississaga Street East.

To aid traffic during this closure, Matchedash Street between Colborne Street East and Mississaga Street East will be open to traffic in one direction only.

Motorists will only be able to travel in a northerly direction (i.e. from Colborne Street East towards Mississaga Street East).

Motorists will need to yield to emergency vehicles in the event an emergency occurs.

City council originally approved a road occupancy permit for Demikon Construction to close that block of Matchedash Street in August of 2018 to help facilitate the construction of the Matchedash Lofts condominium project.

Matchedash Street officially closed in September of 2018 and was supposed to be closed until Oct. 25, 2019. However, council granted an extension that allowed the street to be open until March of 2020.

The Matchedash Street roadway is anticipated to be fully opened by late summer 2020.
