Lakehead University is introducing a new certificate program that will prepare students to address the complex and interconnected environmental challenges facing society today.

The new Certificate in Environmental Sustainability is a five-course, online program for professionals and practitioners alike who want to enhance their skills, knowledge base and expertise in the field of environmental sustainability. The program, offered through Lakehead Orillia’s Department of Sustainability Sciences, can be completed within one year.

“Environmental sustainability has become a very in-demand field,” says Dr. Sree Kurissery, Chair, Department of Sustainability Sciences at Lakehead Orillia. “The program prepares graduates for a diverse and growing field in both the public and private sector, where they will enjoy many opportunities to research and come up with scientifically-based solutions for environmental issues.”

The first cohort will begin online classes in May 2018.

“More and more people are embracing the notion of sustainability to help preserve and protect the planet,” says Dr. Todd Randall, Dean, Science and Environmental Studies. “With this program, students will gain the scientific expertise and practical experience needed to solve modern sustainability challenges in Canada and around the world.”

Issues in Environmental Sustainability, Inquiry into Environmental Methods, and Sustainable Communities are required courses for the Certificate in Environmental Sustainability.

Applicants must have a degree in a relevant field such as urban and regional planning, geography, interdisciplinary studies, biology, ecology, natural resource/environmental management, tourism etc. from a recognized post-secondary institution.
