New residential hospice ensures the right care in the right place at the right time, officials say

Support of the local business community has been vital to ensuring the new 5-bed Mariposa House Hospice can serve the community

This is the third in a five-part series, provided by Mariposa House Hospice, which is set to open soon. Click here for Part 1 and here for Part 2. Check back next Tuesday morning for Part 4.

On any given day, there are approximately 400 people receiving end-of-life palliative care in residential hospices across the province. Very soon, Mariposa House Hospice will add five more people to that total.

The five-bed residential hospice, located at 1140 Brodie Dr., will provide much needed end-of-life palliative care in a community setting that is “close to home.”

In Orillia and the surrounding area, individuals and families have access to a wide variety of home-based palliative care supports from organizations including North Simcoe Muskoka Hospice Palliative Care Network, Hospice Orillia, Home and Community Care, Couchiching Family Health Team and many others.

The services offered by these organizations promote well-being throughout a person’s illness and help people to live at home as long as possible. One thing that has been missing from the list of palliative care supports has been that our community did not have its own residential hospice.

End-of-life palliative care does not always need to be delivered in hospital, but staying home is not always an option. It is important to have an alternate setting available for the final weeks and days of someone’s life.

Residential hospices focus on quality-of-life and provide holistic supports in a homelike setting for individuals who are nearing end-of-life and do not need acute care but can no longer stay at home.

It’s really about making sure people are receiving the right care in the right place at the right time… and when it comes to end-of-life palliative care, an important ingredient to accomplish that goal is making sure our community has its own residential hospice.

Following up on our first two articles to publicly acknowledge some of the major contributions to our capital campaign, Mariposa House Hospice is pleased to acknowledge and thank the following contributors for making it possible to build a residential hospice in our community.

  • John and Judy Mundell
  • Parklawn Corporation, Mundell Funeral Home
