As proclaimed by Mayor and City Council, Terry Fox Week, September 10 to 16, 2018, kicks off in the City of Orillia with a Breakfast for Champions.

Cancer survivors – members of “Terry’s Team” who have registered in advance – will enjoy breakfast donated by Bayside Restaurant on Monday morning. This will be followed by a flag-raising at the Orillia Opera House and then volunteers start distribution of lawn signs throughout the city.

On Tuesday, Inukshuk Enterprises is hosting a Trivia Night to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research at Lake Country Grill. The latest edition of the Great Canadian Hair Do will take place on Friday, location to be determined.

Terry Fox Week brings us to the 2018 Orillia Terry Fox Run on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Couchiching Beach Park, using Orillia’s beautiful and secure waterfront trail. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the run begins at 1 p.m. on Terry Fox Circle.

You can walk, run, bike, blade, walk your dog (on leash) on 1-km, 5-km, or 10-km routes. There’s no entry fee, no minimum pledge or donation, it’s non-competitive and there’s no corporate sponsorship.

“As a long-time volunteer with the Terry Fox Foundation, I am so proud that we still abide by and honour Terry’s values with the strict guidelines in place,” says run organizer Alison Stoneman. “Our committee has no budget, so we rely on the incredible generosity of our community to provide the supplies and services we need to host this event every year. Terry Fox would be proud to know we are still making sure that we are doing our best to make sure that as much money as possible is directed to cancer research.”

All Terry Fox Run events are volunteer-driven. Volunteers have been working hard at planning this event and there are many more scheduled to help host on the day of the run – water stations, route marshaling, registration, cheering section, food tables, barbecue, set up and tear down.

Orillia Terry Fox community runs have raised a cumulative $685,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation since 1988.

In 2017, participants and volunteers raised more than $39,000, once again surpassing the annual goal of one dollar per Orillia resident.

Several local teams as well as many individual fund-raisers have already registered online at www.terryfox.ca/terryfoxrun/Orillia, taking advantage of the secure donation website and the ability to offer immediate tax receipts.
