Nighthawks soar to Simcoe County hoops title

Stifling defence, balanced offensive attack helps OSS crush Nantyr Shores

The Orillia Secondary School (OSS) senior boys’ basketball team put an exclamation point on a perfect season Thursday when they dominated Nantyr Shores Secondary School 69-32 to capture the Simcoe County Athletic Association championship.

The Nighthawks got off to a fast start and seemed to score almost at will at times, while rolling to a well-deserved 35-15 advantage at half-time. It was more of the same in the second half as the home side controlled the play and showed why they are the class of their division this year.

In their impressive regular season, OSS went undefeated, compiling an 8-0 record, while outscoring their opponents 597-309 in what was a dominant season. Nantyr Shores, by comparison, finished third thanks to a 5-3 record.

“Dan (Fournier) and I both think the boys just played one of their best games of the year,” said Mike Tutty, who coaches the talented squad alongside Fournier. “They played with character, poise and unselfishness which is becoming a trademark for OSS basketball.”

The red-hot shooting Nighthawks knocked down 14 three-pointers in the contest – a high-octane attack that was, in part, fueled by the many turnovers the defence forced.

“The defence was stifling as everyone committed to doing their individual job and then extended to do an unbelievable job within the team defensive systems,” said Tutty. “On offence, the boys were able to share the ball. Both Dan and I were thrilled with the effort and character displayed by all 12 members of this team.”
