Nighthawks soar to victory in Blackball opener

24th annual event happening today and tomorrow in local high-school gyms

Orillia Secondary School’s senior girls’ basketball team opened the 24th annual Orillia Blackball Classic Friday morning in style, dribbling to a 40-23 win over St. Mary’s College from Sault Ste. Marie.

OSS is joined in the senior division by local rivals Twin Lakes Secondary School and Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School in addition to 13 teams from out of town.

In addition to St. Mary’s, there are teams from Timmins, St. Catharines, Kingston, Sudbury, Newmarket, Hamilton, Collingwood, Burlington and three teams from Barrie.

There are also eight teams competing in the junior division. In addition to the three local squads – including the defending champs from OSS – there are teams from Barrie, Sudbury, Newmarket and Kingston.

There are games throughout the day today and Saturday with championship games slated for 6 p.m. (junior) and 7:30 p.m. (senior) on Saturday at OSS.
