The daughter of Jamaican immigrants and a Jewish girl from an affluent family struggle to survive and thrive on the streets of Toronto.

Paulette and Danni grew up miles apart in Hamilton and Toronto, but they might as well have been worlds apart.

Paulette is a seasoned sex worker, supporting herself and her drug use. She is a reluctant and unlikely mentor to Danni, who is new to the life and whose crack use has set her on a similar path.

Despite their differences, or perhaps because of them, they develop a difficult and troubled friendship that sees Paulette begin to pull herself together while Danni manages to survive everything that comes her way.

Will her luck run out? Has Paulette learned to make her own luck?

John Miller’s third novel, Wild and Beautiful is the Night, is an incisive look at two women with little in common who are tied together by the perilous reality of their profession, and by their belief that together, they can survive life on the streets.

Miller’s last novel, A Sharp Intake of Breath, won the 2008 Beatrice and Martin Fischer Award in Fiction.

Miller was born and resides in Toronto but loves to cottage in our area. He currently works as a freelance consultant in non-profit organizational development and in global health.

The popular author will be at Manticore Books (103 Mississaga St. E.) on Saturday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. During that time, he will participate in a question-and-answer session, read from his novel and sign books.

Wild and Beautiful is the Night was released in October and is the third of his novels published by Cormorant Books.
