OMAH celebrates 20 years by launching a youth movement

Museum hopes to draw more young people to Arts District; OMAH champion Sue Mulcahy receives Legacy Award at event

The Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH) is celebrating its 20th birthday by offering a gift to young visitors.

The museum announced Friday it is offering free membership to those 25 and younger.

“We want to be a catalyst in our youths’ cultural evolution,” said OMAH executive director Ninette Gyorody.

To do that, young residents need incentive to visit the museum, but it won’t benefit OMAH alone, she said.

“They’re not coming to experience the Arts District, so we want to do anything we can to bring them into our amazing downtown core,” Gyorody said, adding the hope is visitors will check out other galleries and attractions in the area, too. “We’re here to help each other.”

During Friday’s “birthday party,” those who were instrumental in the museum’s creation reflected on the past two decades.

Jean Sarjeant was with the Orillia Historical Society for 20 years, until it amalgamated with the art gallery at the Sir Sam Steele Building to become OMAH. On Thursday, Sarjeant presented the OMAH Legacy Award to another champion of the museum, Sue Mulcahy.

“Sue has always been there, helping out in many, many ways,” Sarjeant said, noting Mulcahy also had a hand in bringing OPP General Headquarters and Lakehead University to town. “We are so fortunate to have her as one of our supporters over the last 20 years.”

The recognition was appreciated, “but what means the most to (Mulcahy) is to see the museum continue,” said her niece, Laura Ross.
