One year ago today, Orillia mayor declared state of emergency

'The year that has followed has been one of the most challenging of our lifetime,' says Mayor Steve Clarke upon reflecting on a year of COVID-19

One year ago today, Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke took the rarely-used step of declaring a state of emergency in Orillia.

"The year that has followed has been one of the most challenging of our lifetime," the mayor said in a video message to the community released today.

The mayor commended and thanked the community for doing "a great job" of following all public health restrictions.

"You have demonstrated incredible resilience and commitment to keeping our city safe," he said.

In reflecting on the year, the mayor said the city has worked hard to mitigate the impact of the pandemic through community assistance measures such as waiving transit fees and tax penalties, offering free parking and implementing a waterfront parking program.

He also applauded the city's economic recovery task force for its work including introducing a city-wide 'See You on the Patio' program last summer, spearheading a 15-minute grant challenge and its 'Shop Local' campaign.

The mayor thanked front-line workers for their "personal sacrifices" and applauded the local business community for its resilience, while thanking citizens for supporting local businesses and one another.

While he said there is light at the end of the tunnel, now is not the time to let up, he urged.

"As we continue to hear the news of a third wave and the dominance of variants of concern, it's essential that we remain committed to (following the) public health measures in place," said Clarke, noting "we have to stay the course."

The mayor said about 400-500 vaccinations are occurring daily at the community clinic set up at Rotary Place and notes there is capacity to do "many more" as the supply increases.

Clarke concluded with a "very real and heart-felt thank you to everyone who helped us make it through this past year and to all who continue to stay positive as we push toward the finish line."
