MIDLAND - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Snowmobile Patrol and road officers have been busy checking snowmobiler operators on area trails and roadway crossings since early January 2018.

Officers have charged five operators with various offences under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act. In all, over 500 snowmobile operators have been checked throughout the detachment patrol area in 2018.

Snowmobile operators are reminded to operate their snowmobiles within their abilities and to the trail conditions. Trail conditions and safety information can also be found on the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) website.

Remember, no ice is safe ice, know before you go, consider the risks to yourself and others should you venture out on frozen surfaces and obey OFSC trail rules.

Police remind motorists that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our trails, waterways and roadways. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority.
