Local shoppers have shelled out an impressive amount of money for the Orillia Youth Centre.

The Home Depot Canada Foundation’s Orange Door Project raised $11,542, as shoppers were asked at the checkout if they wanted to donate $2 or more to the initiative.

“We were quite pleased with the amount this year,” said youth centre director Kevin Gangloff. “It’s gratifying that people believe in it that much.”

The money will be used to provide healthy food, transportation, clothing, and programming at the youth centre.

“Part of the mandate of the Orange Door Project, beyond youth shelters, is youth programming and homelessness prevention,” Gangloff explained. “That money allows us to do all of that. The dollars are invaluable.”

So is the youth centre’s relationship with Home Depot, which has been supporting the centre since 2015, raising more than $100,000.

“This partnership has allowed us to raise our profile in the community immensely, and it’s all due to Michael at Home Depot and the Orange Door team there,” Gangloff said, referring to local Orange Door Project captain Michael Hollmann.

Nationally, the Orange Door Project raised more than $900,000 in support of 120 youth-related charities.
