Sainte-Marie among the Hurons won't be welcoming visitors this month after all.
While the historic site didn't send out any sort of formal notice, it announced on its social media pages that First Light Unplugged will not occur.
"Huronia Historical Parks (HHP) is dedicated to supporting Ontario's efforts to stay home and help stop the spread of COVID-19," the site reads. "It's is with this cooperative approach that we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 celebration of First Light."
The sold-out event was slated to be held Friday and Saturday this weekend and Nov. 27 and 28.
In promoting the "Unplugged” experience, staff noted the offering would still feature candlelit pathways to guide visitors through the historic site. Some buildings will also be open for visitors, but no live music or choirs are planned this time around.
On its website, a passage noted: “Experience the beauty of the season wrapped in history, with take home crafts, treats in the cookhouse and a dozen local vendors located in our Brebeuf Event Centre, showcasing a variety of products."
But now, the holiday vendor market has also been cancelled as well as plans to offer a traditional meal at Restaurant Sainte-Marie.
HHP officials noted in the social media post that following increased concerns and numbers, cancelling the event "was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented situation.
"We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our visitors, but we know it's the right decision for public health and safety. Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding, see you in 2021."
