Orillia group celebrates Robbie Burns with music, whisky and haggis (5 photos)

Companions of the Quaich gather for annual tribute to Scotland's national poet

A local group paid tribute to Scotland’s national poet on the weekend.

The Orillia chapter of the Companions of the Quaich, a Scotch whisky-appreciation society, gathered Sunday at Fern Resort for its annual celebration of Robbie Burns, who died Jan. 25, 1759, at the age of 37.

The “Quaich choir” sang some of Burns’s songs, including My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose and, arguably his most famous, Auld Lang Syne.

The nearly 100 people in attendance sampled three malts and enjoyed a Scottish-inspired meal that included neeps and tatties and a side of haggis.

The Companions of the Quaich is a national organization that was founded in 2000. The Orillia chapter was formed in 2007.
