The Orillia Naturalists’ Club held its winter snowshoe outing at East Coulson Swamp, in the forested hills of the Oro Morraine.

It was well attended, especially since the morning weather was perfect for our hike. The group seemed to be happy to be outside enjoying nature’s bounty once again.

Denis and Carolyn Paccagnella and Heather Ewing were responsible for the group.

We first went to the pond where there is a small bench dedicated to Margo Holt. The area at the edge of the pond made for good photo ops. From there some of the group retraced their path back to the cars while others continued up the hill on the loop, before heading back.

Although there was no wildlife to be seen, there was evidence from tracks in the snow that creatures had once passed by.

Winter fungi were found and photographed as well as a good variety of trees and shrubs. It was just pleasant being in the woods!

The next meeting of the Orillia Naturalist’ Club will be Wednesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Orillia Museum of Art and History on Peter Street South.

This meeting will feature a new event: A Quiz Night.

Come join in the fun and test your knowledge on flora. Teams will be set up randomly and the quiz will feature beautiful slides from the Margo Holt collection. There will be no pressure, but there are prizes.

Quiz night is organized by Sue Deadman and Nancy Ironside. Denis Paccagnella will be our MC for the evening.
