The Orillia OPP has stepped up to help provide some comfort to those in need in the community.
More than 300 pairs of shoes — about 100 of which are new — have been donated, mostly by officers.
Sgt. Andrew MacDonald started the shoe drive five years ago, when he was working in local schools. During that first effort, about 30 pairs were collected.
This year, he said, “We thought that it’d be better to really get it going, especially with COVID and people not having a lot of money.”
The drive started in July and the result has surpassed MacDonald’s expectations.
“I’m just amazed by the community involvement. The officers understand the importance of being involved in the community and they really came up big for us,” he said.
Police will start delivering the shoes Friday. Most will go to students in need. Some will also go to shelters.
It doesn’t end there, though. Members of the community are encouraged to drop off new or gently used shoes at the Orillia OPP detachment on Peter Street. The greatest need is Size 12 shoes for girls and boys, as well as dress shoes, which are often more expensive.
“It’s important to give back to the community and this is a way for us to do that,” MacDonald said.
