Orillia Secondary School fundraiser exceeds expectations

Students with Me to We program collect winter wear, donations for peers in need

ME TO WE—ORILLIA SECONDARY SCHOOL

As the gift-giving season approached, Orillia Secondary School staff and students led the way after recently giving the gift of adequate winter wear to local youth.

As the Me to We members went about their regular school day routines, they quickly realized that many of their peers were not equipped for the frosty forecast. Instead, many of their peers were being forced to make do with what they had, as jackets, mittens and hats aren't accessible to all.

Determined to make a difference in our community, the team began a “hats and mitts” fundraiser. The passionate students asked Orillia Secondary School staff and students to either bring in gently used items or donate money toward newly purchased gear.

The original goal was to raise $100 in donations and collect as many items as possible. However, the week-long fundraiser surpassed the team's expectations. By the end of the week, $590 had been raised, allowing the Me to We students to purchase more expensive winter items (such as boots and jackets) for their fellow students.

All of the collected items were delivered to the Orillia Youth Centre. Grateful for all we had brought them, staff members assured us that we had made a huge impact on the youth in our area and that it would be put to good use.

With help from all of our donors and Giant Tiger Orillia, the “hats and mitts” fundraiser ended as a “hats, mitts, jackets, scarves, boots and socks” fundraiser.
