Marine Surveys and Services Ltd. of Penetanguishene is proud to provide a $2,000 donation to support the Navy League of Canada, Orillia branch, to enhance their commitment and ongoing efforts to introduce young children from the ages of nine to 12 to nautical traditions through the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) Orillia No. 199.

Currently, the enrolment in the corps has dropped following the pandemic. We hope our support will encourage families with children in the age range to consider joining the corps. We also hope to encourage individuals, companies, and social groups in Orillia and surrounding areas to provide financial support and sponsorship to this dedicated volunteer organization that provides a free program to any children interested.

Currently, there are few opportunities for children to access free programming that is not sport or athletic oriented in Orillia and surrounding areas. NLCC Orillia provides opportunities for children who otherwise could not afford it. The only requirements to join NLCC Orillia is to attend parades at ODAS Park weekly in Orillia on Sunday from 6 to 8:30 p.m., wear a white shirt and black pants, take care of the uniform provided after six weeks of joining and participate in fundraising initiatives for the corps, such as tagging, which happens twice a year.

The.Navy League of Canada is a volunteer organization that does not receive any municipal, provincial or federal funding. Rather it is supported completely by private donors, sponsors and through fundraising initiatives. We are proud to support such a well-organized and committed corps that introduces maritime traditions through recreation, education, and training experiences, while promoting inclusion, respect, teamwork and self-discipline. Featuring on-the-water safety and sailing training, first aid, firearms safety, and other nautical subjects, NLCC Orillia also offers a free summer sailing program for the cadets, and is in desperate need to replace their sailing dinghies to continue to offer an excellent summer sailing program.

Our personal connection included both of our sons, who were members of NLCC Orillia. They were provided with all the support, information and experiences required to excel, and following their time there both joined the Canadian Cadet Organization, with one son joining Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 724 Midland Lions, and the other joining Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps 286 Trillium. Both units are based out of the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre in Midland. Leading Sea Cadet Kennedy and Air Cadet Kennedy are proud to present a donation on our company’s behalf to encourage enrolment and participation in all the cadet programs.

The Sea, Air and Army Cadets of Canada offer incredible opportunities, providing life-enriching experiences, training and opportunities. The cadet programs also offer an opportunity to earn secondary school volunteer hours and possibly credits during regional and national summer programs, also during the local parading season from September to June on Wednesday evenings 6:30 to 9 p.m. for air cadets or Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for sea cadets at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre at no charge to the cadets or their families. For further information about the Orillia branch of the Navy League or NLCC Orillia, please email [email protected].
