OSS tuning up for annual Sweet Spring Fling

Evening of music, dance, refreshments and silent auction is key fundraiser for OSS music program

Orillia Secondary School (OSS) musicians are tuning up to present an evening of live music, dancing, sweets and refreshments.

The 10th annual Sweet Spring Fling will take centre stage May 4 at OSS and the evening promises to be an enjoyable one, says Michelle Madden.

“It’s a fun, fun night,” said Madden, who heads up the OSS Parents Music Association. “The kids are actually playing and they’re excited to do it. It’s a lot of fun.”

The senior and intermediate bands will both play at the popular event and will be joined by alumni from both the student and teaching ranks. In addition, Brassworks, a well-known local band, will perform.

“A lot of the local dance clubs come and they’re thrilled to have a chance to dance to live Latin and swing music,” said Madden, noting the tunes will be familiar to most. “It’s incredible to see these dancers and hear this amazing music. It’s so much fun to watch the kids.”

While fun, the event also serves an important purpose. Money raised helps cover the costs of educational trips for OSS music students, helps subsidize trips to competitions and also funds scholarships for graduating Grade 12 students.

“This is a way we can help them get out and experience things,” said Madden. “Through this fundraiser, we can help augment some of these costs.”

Madden said the OSS music program is a hit with students and parents. “The music department at OSS is fantastic,” she said. “The teachers are amazing and they live for these kids. That’s why we volunteer to help … the program is so amazing, we just want to help out.”

And while music, dancing, sweets and coffee and tea are on the menu, there is also “an impressive” silent auction. Madden said there will be a wide range of donated items on auction including weekend getaways, restaurant gift cards, Mariposa Folk Festival passes and gift certificates to local stores. “It’s a great auction with a lot of different, unique items,” said Madden.

Tickets for the annual event at OSS are $20. Drop by OSS to purchase your tickets or call 705-329-4537 to reserve tickets.

Doors open May 4 at 6:30 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. and the fun-filled night will conclude at around 10 p.m.
