What started as a simple idea to invite people to nearby Nature Reserves, has blossomed over the past five years.

The Passport to Nature program, powered by volunteers, business supporters and staff of The Couchiching Conservancy, offers guided hikes and activities throughout the year.

“Our Passport to Nature Program is an invitation to the public to attend, free of charge, 20 events and activities that will take place on some of our 13,000 acres of wild spaces that we have under our stewardship,” said Jamie Ross, president of the conservancy's board.

“It forms a very important link between the public and The Couchiching Conservancy in that it allows us to highlight some of the many unique habitats that are now protected forever," said Ross.

"Thanks to our sponsors such as Sojourn Outdoors, Cuisinart, Cats & Birds of Nature Canada and many others for their support, and congratulations to the group of volunteers who plan the events and find the leaders and marshals,” Ross added.

There are activities like bird watching, looking for butterflies, hiking the wildlands of Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park and learning about woodland ferns.

Kids events like Nuts for Nature has returned again as well, taking place on Sunday, June 9.

If you are looking for nearby nature and people who care about our local environment, then this is a perfect series of events to take part in.

Events are guided by knowledgeable leaders who help the conservancy by volunteering their time. Registration for events is available online and opens about one month prior to each event. Learn more online at www.couchichingconserv.ca.

When the program began in 2015, it received seed funding from The Gosling Foundation and since then, they have been impressed with the progress. As the Foundation is dedicated to amplifying the efforts of environmental non-profits and increasing capacity, they saw an opportunity to offer the Passport to Nature model to others.

With The Couchiching Conservancy as a leading organization, a model and resource document was created and offered to other land trusts and environmental organizations. Passport to Nature Canada is your invitation to experience the marvels of our natural world in communities across Canada.  Each passport describes guided events that are open to all and often free.

There are now a total of ten Passport programs from British Columbia to New Brunswick, with most of them in Ontario.
