POLYESTER SLACKERS

The Polyester Slackers just might be the best cover band you've never heard of.

These four guys from Orillia have been jamming for years but don't put on live shows very often. Why? Not enough room to dance.

"There's a ton of great music from the '80s and '70s," explains Jamie, the band's bass player and main vocalist. "Some of it you want to sit down and listen to, and some of it makes you want to move. We definitely play more of the second kind — and that means you need room to move around, which is hard to do in a restaurant or small bar."

But there will be plenty of room to dance at the Geneva Event Centre in Orillia, where the band will be raising funds for the Mariposa House Hospice on Saturday, March 30.

"Somewhere along the line, dance music became all boom-boom-boom," says Jamie. "Which is fine if that's what you like, but there never seemed to be that much real music in it to me. It's nice to play songs that you can dance AND listen to."

Mariano, the guitar player, agrees. "The '80s was such a great time to grow up listening to the radio. And to see live bands at the high schools, which doesn't happen anymore."

Enter the Polyester Slackers, who formed in 2015, playing the music that defined an era. With a lineup of guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, plus two main vocalists, their sets feature the band's versatility.

"We play classic synth-pop like A Flock of Seagulls, Modern English, Split Endz," says keyboard player Leigh, who does double-duty on vocals and guitar, "but also classic rock like Styx and Cheap Trick."

Greg nods his head in agreement. As the band's drummer, he knows better than anyone how the audience responds to rhythm. "It's fun to mix things up. You might hear Peter Gabriel, David Wilcox, and Depeche Mode all in a row! And that keeps it interesting, in my opinion."

"And fun to play," adds Mariano.

How much fun? Come see for yourself at the Geneva Event Centre on March 30, where guitarist Michael Martyn will start the evening at 8 p.m. (Doors open at 7.) Tickets are $15 dollars and available at Electronic Lifestyles, Sunshine Carpet & Flooring, and Carson Funeral Home. All proceeds for this of-age event go to help build Mariposa House Hospice.

Mariposa House Hospice is building a state-of-the-art 5-bed residential hospice facility that will benefit Orillia and the surrounding area. It will be staffed by a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers who will provide compassionate palliative care to meet residents' every need and to ensure "Honouring every moment of Life" is achieved.

Making an investment in this very important project will allow people living their final days and their families be in an environment that is peaceful, comfortable and meaningful. For more information visit MariposaHouseHospice.com.
