A safe and fun alternative to trick-or-treating is returning to ODAS Park again this Halloween season.
The third annual Trunk or Treat event takes place Saturday, Oct. 29 between 1 and 4 p.m. Trunker registration is now open.
“Everybody is welcome to come and set up a decorated trunk and hand out candy,” explained organizer Derick Lehmann, who hopes to have 60 decorated vehicles signed up for this year’s event, which would accommodate 1,200 trunk-or-treaters.
Trunk-or-treaters will be asked to book a time slot to collect candy while wearing their costumes during the event. Some families use it as an alternative to trick-or-treat on Halloween.
“The parents love it because they aren’t in dark streets at night,” Lehmann said. “The kids love it because they get just oodles of candy from these trunks.”
The event also gives those who don’t get any trick-or-treaters on their street an opportunity to experience the spirit of Halloween.
“It’s a win-win for everybody,” Lehmann said. “Some of the trunkers are amazing. One of them had a whole graveyard scene set up and had actors in costumes to scare the kids.”
He encourages businesses, sports teams and service clubs to donate their time to being trunkers during the event. Trunk-or-trunkers will vote on their favourite trunkers this year and the winners will take home a prize.
There is no cost to the trunk-or-treaters or trunkers, but participants can choose to make a donation to help cover the expenses of the event.
“Any money that we might raise will be donated to the Orillia Youth Centre," said Lehmann.
Trunk-or-treaters can claim their spot and register for the event Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. In previous years, the event has been sold out in 10 hours. To register, click here.
