Pups from overcrowded U.S. shelters make long trek north

'We want to get as many animals into loving homes as we can over the holiday season,' says local OSPCA official of the 27 dogs that have arrived in region

The Canada-United States border opened just in time for Piper.

The friendly hound was one of 27 dogs transferred to the province from North Carolina earlier this week.

“They are all settling in at Ontario SPCA and Humane Societies across Ontario after a long drive,” Midland Animal Centre community development coordinator Robin Elliott explained.

“Shelters in the U.S. are at, or nearing capacity, so they reached out to us for assistance which we were happy to provide.”

Elliott said the pups are currently in an assessment period to have a full health check, and also to give the staff time to get to know them so they'll be ready for that adoption through the OSPCA’s iAdopt program.

“We can match them with the perfect 'furrever' home,” Elliott said. “We want to get as many animals into loving homes as we can over the holiday season.

“Our standard adoption procedures still apply, including use of our science based Meet Your Match survey, to ensure that we are placing the right animal with the right family.”

And for those not able to adopt right now, Elliott said there are other ways to get involved and help animals.

As an example, she said local residents can enter Ontario’s cutest adopted animal photo contest for a chance to win some great prizes, including Swiffer prize packs as well as a grand prize of a $500 PetSmart gift card.

Elliott said there’s also a chance to give back to vulnerable animals by shopping at the Ontario SPCA’s Paws & Give online giving store.

The photo contest, which is open to anyone who has adopted an animal from any organization, closes at midnight on Dec. 17.
