On Wednesday, May 22, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers, staff and participants took part in a final fundraiser at Kenzington Burger Bar in Barrie to boost the proceeds for this year’s Barrie/Orillia Relay for Life event.

Thanks to Kenzington Burger Bar’s generous contribution, the evening raised over $340 to go towards the 2019 Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life goal of $50,000.

“At the Canadian Cancer Society, every dollar counts,” said Brenda MacGregor, Senior Manager, Simcoe- Muskoka Community Office- Canadian Cancer Society.

“We rely on the proceeds from signature events like Relay for Life to fund many of our essential community programs, such as our Transportation program to take Cancer patients to and from appointments, and our Telephone Support program to help people living with Cancer in the Simcoe Muskoka region.”

On June 7, over 140 people are set to take part in Barrie’s 19th Relay for Life at Chappell Farms in Oro-Medonte. Between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., participants will walk, jog and run laps as individuals or part of a team in support of thousands of people living with Cancer.

Participants are encouraged to arrive between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to set up and personalize their camps for the evening. The event will host some amazing live local bands and engaging children’s entertainment. Complimentary food and beverages will also be available for participants thanks to local community sponsors.

Cancer Survivors can attend for free and are invited to take part in a celebratory ‘Survivor Lap’. There is also a luminary ceremony to remember those we have lost, as ‘relayers’ walk together to change the future of Cancer.

About Relay for Life

For 20 years, Relay for Life has been the Canadian Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. At the Relay, you’ll see participants of all ages taking turns walking around a designated track. We ask each team to have at least one member on the track at all times, as a way to symbolize our solidarity with those affected by cancer across the country. Relay is more than a fundraiser. It’s a chance to come together and celebrate the survivors in our communities, who send a powerful message of hope for those living with the disease.

Quick Facts

  • More than 200,000 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer each year. Nearly 1 in 2 Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with Cancer within their lifetime
  • Donations support services for people affected by cancer. Through these services, CCS helped nearly 250,000 Canadians last year
  • CCS has channeled over $1.4 billion to cancer research since the 1940s. In that time, only about 25% of Canadians with cancer would survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis. Today, survival is about 60%
  • To move research discoveries from the lab to people with cancer, CCS supports clinical trials at more than 80 hospitals and cancer centres across the country. This includes Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, where many people from our area are treated
  • Recently, one of the clinical trials funded by CCS found that a new 4-drug chemotherapy regimen significantly delayed recurrence and extended survival in those with pancreatic cancer. Overnight, news of this trial’s results changed the way pancreatic cancer is treated around the world and has given more precious time to those living with this difficult to treat and deadly form of cancer
