Renowned Ojibway artist, ecologist to speak at conservancy event

Couchiching Conservancy's Annual General Meeting takes place March 7; Forum is an opportunity to talk with staff, volunteers about 'how to help make a better future'

The Couchiching Conservancy will welcome Rick Beaver on Saturday, March 7 at Hawk Ridge Golf & Country Club in Orillia for its Annual General Meeting.

The meeting is an opportunity for supporters and the community to learn about conservation efforts of the year and plans for the future. All are welcome to attend the meeting and members will have voting rights.

Rick Beaver will join as the guest speaker. He is an internationally recognized Michi Saagiig Ojibway artist and ecologist from Alderville First Nation in Ontario. He has been painting and printmaking professionally for more than 40 years.

His diverse involvements have included consultations in aboriginal tourism, the arts, cultural history and ecosystem restoration.

Beaver will share his insights on land use and management approaches between indigenous traditional practices and western science. In past years, he was as a member of the design team for The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario and served as the research and restoration coordinator for Alderville First Nation’s Black Oak Savanna for many years.

There will be table displays and photos for volunteering, nature reserves, donations and membership, the Heartwood Fund and other topics.

This is an opportunity to talk with staff and volunteers to learn about how to help make a better future.

Pre-reading materials including annual report, audited financial statements, and board of director candidates are available on the conservancy’s website. Some printed copies will be available, as well as the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.
