Rider missing after snowmobiles go through ice on Sturgeon Lake (update: deceased person recovered)

6:15 p.m. update:

OPP Sgt. Peter Leon confirms to BarrieToday that the body of a missing snowmobiler has been recovered from Sturgeon Lake near Bobcaygeon by OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU).

The name of the 48-year-old man has not been released. 

Leon also tweeted, “Details to follow by #CKLOPP as investigation permits. Thank you to all who have assisted as this tragedy has unfolded.”

Original story, 8 a.m.: 

The OPP say two snowmobiles went through the ice Saturday evening on Sturgeon Lake.

One rider was rescued and taken to hospital. One rider remains missing, according to a tweet from OPP Central Region.  

Trenton Search and Rescue was assisting in the search efforts. Karwartha Lakes OPP, Kawartha Lakes Fire and Rescue and Kawartha Paramedics were all on scene, the OPP said. 

Police say more information will be released as it becomes available.

The accident occurred on the first day of Snowmobile Safety Week which runs through to Jan. 28. 

Last year, there were 27 snowmobile related deaths in the province.
