Two new community gardens may be coming to Orillia’s parks.

Councillors Tim Lauer and Janet-Lynne Durnford requested city staff look into the logistics and costs of establishing a community garden at Hillcrest Park Monday.

Lauer said a number of residents in the neighbourhood have expressed interest in a community garden in the area.

“We have one resident who is actually interested in … being a part of organizing the effort,” Lauer said. “I also believe that last year, we ran them at Lakehead, there was actually a waiting list, so there could be significant need here.

“I thought we would start by finding out how much it would cost, the logistics of actually doing it.”

Council supported Lauer and Durnford’s request, but Coun. Jay Fallis suggested adding a community garden to the York Street parkette as part of the request.

“(Some residents) have been kind of floating this idea of wanting to do something in that area, too,” Fallis said. “One of the spaces that I really want to explore in addition, as a second garden as well … (is) in the little parkette there.”

Council supported Fallis’ amendment, and directed city staff to explore the feasibility of creating two community gardens in Hillcrest Park and York Street Parkette.
