The federal Green Party will be choosing a Simcoe North candidate soon, with two contenders in the running for the spot.

Mathew Lund and Erik Schomann will be battling it out for the nomination at the Simcoe North Electoral District Association of the Green Party of Canada’s event at Autumn’s Diner in Coldwater on May 5.

Lund grew up in Washago and worked in several areas of the entertainment industry through his 20s. Subsequently he studied law, established his own business as a paralegal, married and settled on a hobby farm in the village of Waverley in Tay Township. He and his wife have two children; a boy and a girl.

Lund is also a member of the Barrie Chamber of Commerce through his paralegal business and joined the Green Party after moderating last year’s provincial debates and being attracted to the party’s values and ideas. He sees himself as an advocate for health care, small business and clean energy technology.

Schomann is a college professor residing in Lafontaine in Tiny Township.

He teaches Communication Studies at Seneca College.

His father worked on large engineering projects around the world, exposing Schomann to many cultures and languages and giving him a respect for indigenous cultures.

As an adult he worked in China for ten years and is fluent in English, German, Mandarin and French. When time allows, he accepts short-term contracts leading teams of students on educational journeys through China and South East Asia.

Schomann seeks to promote the understanding that a healthy environment is necessary for societies, economies, cultures and individuals to thrive.

The event starts at 2 p.m., with a question-and-answer period followed by a closed ballot election and a formal presentation of the selected candidate.

The federal election takes place Oct. 21, 2019.
