The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a Midland woman died Monday night.

At about 2 p.m. Sunday, Southern Georgian Bay OPP responded to a medical assistance call at a residence in the area of William Street and Birchwood Drive in Midland.

Upon arrival, an officer began performing CPR on a 31-year-old woman and administered naloxone, a drug used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose.

Emergency medical services took over first aid when they arrived and then took the woman to hospital for treatment.

At 8:43 p.m. on Monday, the woman was pronounced dead.

The SIU has confirmed the deceased was not a resident of the home to which officers responded.

Asked if it was common practice for the SIU to investigate the case of an overdose death that happened after, not during, a police officer’s involvement with the matter, SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said, “Following the interaction with police on the 19th, the woman was subsequently transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead the following day. As such, an incident of this nature would fall under the unit’s mandate.”

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this case. One subject officer and one witness officer have been designated.

The SIU is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the lead investigator at 800-787-8529. It is also urging anyone with video evidence related to the incident to upload it through the SIU website.
