Emergency Preparedness Survivor is an event held annually during Emergency Preparedness Week in Simcoe County since 2014. This year, the event is being hosted by the Orillia Fire Department on May 8, 2018.

Local emergency services and Simcoe County are partnering with a local high school to involve the students in demonstrations of specialized teams and resources they use to be prepared for and respond to emergencies.

On May 8, the event will include search and rescue techniques with the Ontario Provincial Police K9 Unit, hazmat decontamination scenario with the Orillia and Rama Fire Services as well as other critical information sessions with the County of Simcoe Emergency Management Team.

“Emergencies affect everyone. It’s important to ensure you are prepared. This event is happening during the school day to highlight the importance of students knowing how to contact family or caregivers in an emergency situation,” said Ralph Dominelli, Orillia Fire Chief. “It very beneficial for these students to have an opportunity to learn emergency preparedness information from the many emergency service agencies in the area. We appreciate everyone’s participation in this exercise.”

Students are also educated about the steps they can take at home with their families to be better prepared for emergencies and disasters.
