Dr. Stanley Liu will talk about his extensive DNA research on prostate cancer at the next Prostate Cancer Awareness Group meeting in Orillia.

The Sunnybrook researcher will spend a couple hours Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34, located at 215 Mississaga St. E. sharing his research that identifies the best treatment for each patient.

Liu’s work currently focuses on how the immune system changes in patients, with aggressive prostate cancer, receiving different types of radiation treatment. Certain immune system changes may represent new biomarkers that will allow doctors to predict how a patient’s prostate cancer is responding to radiation early on in treatment.

Liu and his team have received grants from funds raised through the Huronia Motorcycle Ride for Dad. The money has gone towards research that involves growing prostate cancer cells from patient biopsies in the lab to increase predictability around response to various cancer treatments.

The event is open for all. Light refreshments will be available. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the talk begins at 7 p.m. For further information, call 705-325-7874.
