Three killed in horrific Bradford crash

Black SUV crushed under commercial vehicle in head-on collision

Three people were killed Friday in a horrific head-on collision on Yonge Street, just south of Line 14 in Bradford West Gwillimbury.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., South Simcoe police identified the victims as a nine-year-old boy, a 37-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman. Police said the boy died in hospital.

The collision occurred around 4:30 p.m., Friday, between a southbound commercial vehicle and a northbound black SUV.

The force of the impact was so great that the SUV’s front end was crushed under the truck.

It wasn’t until 9:24 p.m. that the vehicles were pulled apart and a heavy tow truck was able to remove the SUV from the scene.

“It’s a significant amount of damage consistent with a head-on collision with a large vehicle,” said South Simcoe police Sgt. Dave Phillips.

Phillips confirmed that all three passengers in the SUV were killed in the crash.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The third, who police later identified as the young boy, was taken to Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket in life-threatening condition, but did not survive.

No names have been released pending next-of-kin notification.

Asked if the victims were related, he would only say that police are “working on the relationship of the people right now.”

The truck driver was treated at the scene and released.

Investigators are asking for witnesses to contact South Simcoe police.

“We are looking for any witnesses who may have been travelling on Yonge Street” and who may have seen the black SUV northbound prior to the collision, Phillips said.

The investigation is ongoing and will include full examination of the mechanical state of both vehicles.
