Three people charged following probe of Midland motel robbery

OPP Investigators have completed their investigation resulting in three people being charged criminally as follows in connection with this incident.

John Alex Daka, 36 years of Barrie and Vance Thomas Sylvester, 29 years of Christian Island:

  • Robbery with violence
  • Disguise with intent
  • Assault causing bodily harm

Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Gillian LaChapelle, 32 years of Midland with:

  • Robbery with violence

Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

All of the accused persons have been released from police custody in connection to these charges and were released on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland at a future date. Investigators wish to thank those members of the public who assisted in this investigation.

Original release:

On April 13, 2019 at 11:54 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Southern Georgian Bay detachment were dispatched to a King Street Midland Motel after the OPP Communications Centre received a 911 call reporting that a robbery had just occurred.

Attending officers learned that a male staying at the motel being visited by a female guest had been assaulted by two unknown males in his room. The assault continued outside at which time the victim was disrobed and assaulted again and a black gym bag containing his wallet and personal effects was taken by force from him by the male suspects.

The male suspects fled the scene in a dark coloured sedan.

Investigators are asking for assistance from the public in identifying the two male suspects who were wearing masks and operating a dark coloured sedan at the time of the occurrence.

Anyone who may have walked along or driven along the south end of King Street, Midland near Galloway Boulevard between 11 p.m. April 13 until 12:30 a.m. April 14, 2019 and noticed any suspicious activity is asked to please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
