GOODNIGHT, SUNRISE

Just before Orillia native Gordon Lightfoot’s 80th birthday earlier this month, a Toronto band paid tribute to the folk music icon.

Goodnight, Sunrise presents a modern, energetic interpretation of Lightfoot's timeless Canadian ballad, Song for a Winter's Night.

You can listen to the song on Soundcloud here.

While the song has been covered many times before in more reserved genres, lead singers Vanessa Vakharia and David Kochberg reimagined it as an anthemic duet. Their harmonies build over a lush and expanding production, sampling sounds from the pop, dance, and alternative rock genres. The result is a wholly original cover that preserves the themes of love and yearning in Gord's gentle poetry, while capturing the undeniable electricity that runs through the holiday season and keeps us warm during those winter months.
