In Simcoe Muskoka, one in eight households are food insecure, but North Americans waste nearly half of that produced. What’s going on? United Way Simcoe Muskoka (UWSM) is bringing the highly acclaimed documentary Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story to Barrie to spark educated conversations on the topic.

“It’s time to rethink our approach to food,” says UWSM Director, Community Impact, Rosslyn Junke. “In this bountiful region, local residents shouldn’t have to wonder how to put healthy food on the family table each night. This film does a good job highlighting the many ways perfectly good food is wasted, but also provides options for recovery – with a few good laughs along the way.”

The 74-minute film, that was called “Hugely entertaining,” by Variety, will be screened at the Barrie Uptown Theater on Nov. 5 for a single showing at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door by donation with rush seating. Sponsors Plumbtech Plumbing and Chicapea are helping to make the event possible.

Canadian filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of food waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on discarded food. Their journey was captured in this award-winning feature documentary.
