Valiquette-Thompson wins seat on Severn Township Council

Mayor and deputy mayor acclaimed

The results are in from Severn Township, where there was no race for the township's top two political posts.

Mike Burkett was acclaimed as mayor while Jane Dunlop, after eight years as a councillor, was acclaimed to the position of deputy mayor.

While there will be mostly familiar faces around the council table, there will be one new face - to Severn.

Former Orillia City Councillor Sarah Valiquette-Thompson, who opted to run in Ward 5 in Severn this time around, was victorious. She garnered 409 votes, defeating Donald Westcott, who managed 320 votes in defeat.

In Ward 1, Mark Taylor easily achieved re-election, garnering 347 votes. His challenger, Suzy Burtenshaw, received 75 votes.

In Ward 2, Judith Cox, who served as deputy mayor with the previous council, was elected. She received 517 votes to top Colin Bidmead, who had 225 votes cast in his favour.

It was a four-person race in Ward 3, where incumbent John Betsworth topped the field with 422 votes. Phil Brennan (348) was second, followed by Lynda Gibbons (171) and Mike Winacott (19).

Ron Stevens was acclaimed in Ward 4.
