COUCHICHING CONSERVANCY

The Couchiching Conservancy’s next Passport to Nature event presents a virtual visit to the unique Carden Alvar with conservation specialist and skilled photographer, Cameron Curran.
In partnership with the Carden Field Naturalists, this special presentation takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Carden Recreation Centre.
“This is a rare opportunity to learn about this small geographic area that is home to an abundance of wildlife,” says Tanya Clark, Development Coordinator with the Couchiching Conservancy.
“The audience will be taken on a journey through the wondrous woodlands, alvars and wetlands of Carden with Cameron as a guide, using a mix of photographs, videos and stories.”
“People often marvel at how many species call this area home, and are surprised by its heritage, with some of its biological communities sitting on top of fossilized coral reefs,” explains Curran.
“The Carden Alvar is really a shimmering mosaic of globally rare wildlife habitats that often go unnoticed.”
Curran’s interest in nature started young, having spent his summers growing up at Lake Dalrymple near the Carden Alvar. He worked as a summer intern with the Couchiching Conservancy, spending time on the landscape he loved while assisting with conservation projects.
Curran went on to complete a Bachelor of Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) in Rural Planning and Development from the University of Guelph. He currently works with the public sector as a planner focusing on the Niagara Escarpment and continues to volunteer with the Conservancy.
This presentation is sure to fuel an appreciation for the rich biodiversity found in the Carden Alvar and the critical need for its conservation. Admission is a $2 donation at the door (in support of the Carden Field Naturalists Club) and pre-registration is encouraged.
