Woman drowns after canoe capsizes in Lake Couchiching

North York woman, 25, has not been identified; second female was unhurt. Neither woman was wearing a PFD

The Victoria Day Weekend has ended in tragedy on a local lake.

On Sunday at approximately 12 p.m., the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an overturned canoe on Lake Couchiching.

Preliminary investigation reveals that two females were in a canoe that overturned approximately 100 metres from the shore of Lake Couchiching. 

Neither female was wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). 

As a result of this incident a 25-year-old North York woman was brought to Orillia's Soldiers' Memorial Hospital by County of Simcoe Paramedic Services (CSPS). The female was pronounced deceased at the hospital. 

The second person was cleared medically at the scene however attended the hospital on her own.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notifications and a post mortem.

Orillia OPP Marine Unit, Rama Police Service, Rama Emergency Medical Services, CSPS, Orillia Fire Department, Rama Fire, Ramara Fire and Rescue all assisted with the rescue and recovery.

The Orillia OPP would like to remind the public to wear their PFDs at all times when on the water. PFDs will only work if they are worn.
