Team Ontario wrapped up their final day of competition at the Canada Summer Games with an eliminator-style sprint event.

The three Ontario female riders made the finals and we’re riding 1-2-3 when a crash caused some chaos.

Oro-Medonte cyclist Ava Holmgren was able to quickly get around the crash and sprinted her way to the silver medal. Her twin sister, Isabella Holmgren, was held up a little longer and recovered to record a strong fourth-place showing out of the 21 participants who started the event.

It was quite a week for the talented local sisters. The dynamic duo helped Team Ontario win a gold medal in the women's team relay event.

In that competition, Isabella Holmgren set a blistering pace for Team Ontario, turning in the fastest lap time for women. Jocelyn Stel rode a strong second lap for Ontario. The team was anchored by Ava Holmgren to ensure the team garnered gold.

Ava Holmgren kicked off the event in Welland by winning gold for Team Ontario in the women's cross-country mountain bike event, finishing 51 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Marin Lowe from Team B.C.

Isabella Holmgren started strong, riding in the top three with her sister. However, she suffered a mechanical problem with her bike and had to run, ending up 8th overall.

After an amazing experience at the multi-sport games in Welland, the 17-year-old Holmgren twins, along with their brother, Gunnar Holmgren — Orillia's reigning athlete of the year — are gearing up for the Mountain Bike World Championships after each was selected to represent Team Canada at the international event.

The championships are being held in Les Gets, France from Aug. 24-28, 2022.
