Channel Cats 'surprise' foes, shatter records at Milton meet

'Our swimmers did well competing at their first meet' of the season, said swim team's coach; Several records were broken

The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently participated in their first meet of the season held in Milton. Swimmers from the bronze, silver and gold training groups were in attendance.

“Our swimmers did well competing at their first meet. We had some best times and two swimmers broke some club records,” says head coach Meredith Thompson-Edwards. “It was a nice surprise as the first meet is usually one to get the cobwebs out, and remember what it’s like to race.”

Blythe Wieclawek, 14, reached her goal of breaking 1:00 in the 100-metre freestyle with a time of 59.59, and set a new club record in that event. She also broke records in the 50 butterfly (29.29) 100 butterfly (1:06.90) and 100 Individual Medley (1:10.22).

Indiana Abram, 12, broke the 11/12-year-old male 50 butterfly (33.39) and 100-metre butterfly (1:16.11).

This meet also offered a 50-metre freestyle eliminator event. The top eight swimmers 13 and over competed in an eliminator, until there were two swimmers left. Sayre Hart, 14, and Wieclawek both qualified and finished fifth and first respectively.

Channel Cats swimmers in attendance include: Rachel Carr, Kate Sontag, Peyton Nie, Hayden Nie, Alycia Golding, Owen Wagner, Nathan McClinchey, Olivia LePage, Anna Holton, Jackson Denne, Evie Cooke, Meghan Rogers, Blythe Wieclawek, Adair Wieclawek, Katie Heckendorn, Indiana Abram, Sayre Hart, Tristan Sekleski, Ariel McGee, Charlee Tillmanns, Molly Hazel, Kiana DeGrechie and Alexander Baillie.

“We are very proud of all of our swimmers' efforts and know what we will work on heading into our next competitions,” said Coach Tatum Haslem.

The Orillia Channel Cats will be racing in Barrie at “The Barrie Aquafest” for their next competition early November.
