Grizzlies send Lakehead fans home disappointed

It was a raucous crowd at this year's Frost Cup

The Georgian College Grizzlies found themselves right at home in the lion's den Thursday night.

That den was Rotary Place, the arena within the shadow of Lakehead University and it was filled with raucous Lakehead fans cheering on their Thunderwolves as the teams fought for the coveted Frost Cup — a trophy earned by the winner of the annual exhibition clash.

The Grizzlies sent those cheering fans, many wearing Lakehead colours, clanging noisemakers and holding hand-made signs, home disappointed as they eked out a dramatic 2-1 win in a shootout.

After a scoreless first period, Georgian College scored on a laser blast from the point midway through the second period, quieting the fans — briefly. Less than a minute later, Lakehead answered, bringing the fans to their feet. However, the two rivals could not find the back of the net the rest of the way.

In the shootout, Georgian College scored the lone goal to earn bragging rights over their local post-secondary school rivals — and earned the Frost Cup.
