Hundreds of students compete at Area Championship (11 photos)

About 1,000 students in Grades 4-6 participated in several disciplines at Orillia's largest annual track and field competition

Several hundred students from dozens of local schools participated in Tuesday's Area Elementary School Track and Field Championship.

The event, held at Twin Lakes Secondary School, featured the top Grades 4-6 performers from each school, who held their own track meets earlier this spring.

The athletes competed in a variety of events including the ball throw, the running long jump, the standing long jump, 400-metre and 800-metre races, relays and other events.

The largest track and field event of the season was originally slated for Monday, but was delayed by a day due to weather. The competition for intermediate students (Grades 7-8) was held earlier this month.

There were many parents and relatives lining the track and cheering on the young athletes who competed under sunny skies on a day that featured breezy conditions and slightly lower-than-normal temperatures.

Once again this year, members of the Twin Lakes' Athletic Council helped to organize the meet and provided volunteer assistance to ensure its success.

Organizers said almost 1,000 students participated in Tuesday's day-long event at the Orillia high school.
