Lady Kings double up on Oshawa for home-field win

Emma Torkoff scores four of team's eight goals against opponents in U19 exhibition game at West Orillia Sports Complex

Two U19 women’s lacrosse teams put on a show for the sport’s younger players in the area during a recent exhibition game.

Following an Orillia Lady Kings house league session this week, the Sweet Oven-sponsored Orillia Lady Kings and the Oshawa Blue Knights faced off at the West Orillia Sports Complex, hoping to generate excitement for the sport among the younger athletes after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The home team defeated Oshawa 8-4.

Emma Torkoff, who is heading to the University of Albany in the fall, netted four goals and had an assist, while Riley Marwick, Catherine Varley, Brooklyn Barker and Hannah Rudge added a goal each. Kayleigh Aitken, who will head to the University of Detroit Mercy to play Division 1 lacrosse, earned the win in net.

The exhibition game was an opportunity for coaches to focus on advancing players’ defensive skills, and Avery Paek, Emma Marwick, Kierra Orr, Mayson Parnell and Bethany Marchant impressed in the midfield.

The U19 Lady Kings team is coached by former Division 1 athlete Kelsi Pritchard and current Division 1 player Paige Stachura, who noted the squad has made significant improvements as it eyes a provincial medal this year.

The team is currently in second place in the U19A division of the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse Association.

Provincial playdowns will begin the weekend of July 15 to 17.
